2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB vs. 2020 BMW X1
July 26 2020,
The Mercedes-Benz GLB emerges in the compact crossover segment with luxurious amenities and unique adaptability for growing families. It seats up to seven passengers—rare for a compact SUV—and delivers satisfying power to accommodate. Two models let you suit power, efficiency and style to your taste, including the GLB 250 4MATIC and AMG GLB 35. To help you understand the capabilities of this new crossover, we compare it directly with the BMW X1.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB excels in efficiency
The GLB 250 4MATIC features a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. For added performance and faster shifting, an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission pairs with the engine. This advanced engine and transmission help reduce fuel consumption that results in a surprising 9.2/6.4 L/100 km (city/highway). The 4MATIC also features standard all-wheel drive with mode switching, adapting the vehicle to Canada’s variable road types and weather conditions.
The BMW X1 also includes a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It produces similar power and torque to the 250 4MATIC, but it falls behind the efficiency curve. At a rating of 10.3/7.7 L/100 km, you will spend more time and money at the gas pump.
The 302-horsepower AMG GLB 35 features a fuel efficiency of 9.3/6.5 L/100 km (city/highway), which is more efficient than the BMW X1 that also has a 70-horsepower reduction over the AMG.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB has the right size and capacity
Despite its classification as a compact SUV, the GLB optimizes every litre of volume throughout the cabin, providing you and your family with more adaptability than the BMW X1. This also includes a rare and optional third row seat that offers plenty of space for adults or children.
The GLB’s cargo volume extends to 1,804 litres behind the front seats, with rear seats folded. This provides 142 more litres than the X1 in the same configuration. Five-passenger GLB models include 500 litres of capacity behind the rear seats, which is nearly equivalent to the volume of two compact sedan trunks.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB also has the acclaimed MBUX system that responds marvelously to your vocal commands, a technology that the X1 doesn’t have.
