2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB vs. 2021 Volvo XC40: Versatility Speaks Volumes
December 18 2020,
The compact, yet roomy GLB crossover brings an admirable blend of technology, performance, and comfort. It also features solid agility and handling that takes on tight corners in urban environments or curvy roads in the country. Here, we compare the GLB to the Volvo XC40.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB is the top performer
The GLB features two powertrains that provide the right amount of power and capability, no matter which you select. The GLB 250 includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The AMG GLB 35 upgrades to a power output of 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The XC40 all-gasmodels offer two powertrain options, but ultimately they don't offer a trim that competes with the top performer of the GLB lineup. T4 engine-equipped XC40 models generate 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, which is well short of the GLB's base model. Trims with the T5 output 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Overall, the GLB retains power and performance leadership among all gas-powered models.
The XC40 also offers an all-electric platform, Recharge. Like other compact SUVs with EV platforms, there is a strong power output, but it doesn't last long. It is marketed as an 'urban' commuter SUV with a limited range; the GLB will take you much farther with a lower price tag.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB blends versatility into a luxury package
Inside, both vehicles have nearly identical front and rear seat occupant volume measurements. But the GLB emerges as the more versatile vehicle. Mercedes-Benz designed the GLB to hold more passengers and cargo than the XC40.
The interior's cargo capability is up to 1,680 liters, a generous amount for a compact crossover. This edges out the XC40's maximum volume and enables the GLB to offer a 50/50-split third row with the EASY ENTRY system. Second row seats are in a 40/20/40 setup and can fold flat and recline for passenger comfort or more utility.
GLB occupants also have the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) advantage. It is an interactive tool that features ultra-advanced navigation and adjusts vehicle functions with a simple voice command or screen touch - the XC40 doesn’t offer such advanced features.
