2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS : The new Electric Flagship
June 09 2021,
The S-Class is the flagship Mercedes-Benz and has been since the W116 generation arrived in 1972. It will be redesigned for 2022, but that’s not what this article is about. We actually want to talk about the all-new 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS, unveiled earlier this year. The EQS is a fully electric luxury sedan and like the S-Class, it will be the flagship of Mercedes-Benz’ upcoming EV lineup.
Mercedes-Benz is indeed expanding its electric vehicle portfolio and the EQS will be the first sedan to arrive on the market. EQ will be the moniker representing the new EV lineup with EQE and EQC models expected down the road.
A lot of power and incredible refinement
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS will feature a powerful 516-horsepower engine with standard 4Matic AWD and will be powered by a 107.8-kWh battery expected to deliver 480 kilometres of range on the EPA test with the WPLT test returning an astounding 700 kilometres of range! Measuring over 5 metres long, the EQS features a distinctive, futuristic design that will be immediately noticeable on the road and the design is also very aerodynamic, featuring a drag coefficient of just 0.20.
Inside, it is just as impressive. The highlight of the sublime EQS cockpit is the new MBUX Hyperscreen which measures almost 1.5 metres in length and stretches from door to door. The Hyperscreen features three displays, one for the driver, one for the passenger, and one for the MBUX infotainment system in the middle. Mercedes-Benz built the Hyperscreen to be as user-friendly as possible with a zero-layer interface that can feature six functions without having to change menus.
Back to the powertrain, Mercedes-Benz says the EQS will charge in 31 minutes on the DC Fast-Charger network with the same charger adding 300 kilometres in just 15 minutes. Canadian EQS buyers will get three years of Mercedes me Charge and Green Charging access which means you can easily charge the EQS across the country.
The 516 horsepower comes from two electric motors that also push out 630 pound-feet of torque which gets you to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. More versions should be coming as well, although we don’t know all the details yet. The EQS will feature paddle shifters to control the engine output and a rear-wheel steering system will ensure increased agility with a drastically small turning radius of 10.9 metres. That’s roughly the turning radius of an A-Class.
The goal of the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS is to become the benchmark for electrified luxury, and it is exactly what we expect from Mercedes-Benz going forward, and more.
