A return on the remarkable season of Lewis Hamilton with Mercedes-AMG in F1
August 30 2019,
The Formula 1 season is about halfway through after the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this month and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team with Lewis Hamilton at the wheel continues to dominate. Hamilton finished first in Hungary to record his 8th win and 10th podium finish in 2019.
Just minutes from the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has a 62-point lead over second-placed Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Valtteri Bottas. After 12 out of 21 races, the Mercedes-AMG team currently dominates the Formula One standings with 438 points. Ferrari is second with 288 points while Red Bull Racing Honda third with 244 points.
It's another big year for Mercedes-AMG Petronas, who has won the last five F1 constructor championships with a total of 74 victories between 2014 and 2018. Driving at Mercedes-AMG Petronas since 2013, Lewis Hamilton has won 52 races during this same period, more than any other driver.
The dominance of Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Lewis Hamilton in recent years is not only the result of an excellent collaboration between a high-performance car and an exceptional driver, it is also the result of an intelligent strategy and exemplary race management. We witnessed it at the last Hungarian Grand Prix, notably.
With less than 10 laps to go, Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Lewis Hamilton were more than 12 seconds behind Max Verstappen of Red Bull. Engineers at Mercedes-AMG Petronas predicted that Verstappen's tires would not keep pace until the end of the race and planned a strategic pit stop to give Hamilton the best possible car. The strategy worked and Hamilton closed the gap to take the lead on lap 67. He finished first with Verstappen second.
Mercedes-AMG: from the track to the road
The domination of Mercedes-AMG in F1 has an impact for consumers who buy a Mercedes-AMG car. Several of the technologies developed in F1 such as electrification, in particular, have led to technologies for Mercedes-AMG road vehicles. EQ Boost is the perfect example.
With Mercedes-AMG continuing to dominate in Formula 1, Mercedes-AMG vehicles will continue to dominate rivals on the road as well.
