Fall Driving Tips: Keep Safe and Alert
September 29 2020,
The colder months are just around the corner and, like every year, a few mechanical and behavioural adjustments are needed to stay safe during the fall months.
Your Mercedes-Benz is equipped with the finest in terms of performance and safety systems, but sometimes other vehicles around you are not as fortunate. Many things happen in the fall; alertness and preparation are key to your safety on the road.
Beware of the glare
Back to school traffic put a lot of cars on the road. But there are also many children on the sidewalk at specific hours of the day. Keeping a close eye on your surroundings during stops in school zones, especially in the morning and evenings. Because the sun moves closer to the horizon, it can create a glare straight into your eyes. Have a pair of sunglasses handy.
As days get shorter, your vision can be compromised in the dark. More vigilance and making sure you are well rested before you take the wheel to avoid hazards like potholes.
Wildlife can also be a problem in November. Mating season, for example, bring a lot of deer out of the woods and vigilance is key to avoid accidents.
Changing your tires earlier than later
There are a few good reasons to change your tires earlier than later. Even if there is no snow on the ground, the falling leaves can accumulate on the ground and leave patches that become slippery and can cause loss of traction, especially if you’re on summer tires.
If you cannot get your tire change done before the snow, it is important that you check the condition of your summer tires for thread and proper tire pressure which is a very important factor when temperatures drop. Make sure your tire pressure is at the right specification. The pressure stated in your owner’s manual is the one that you should be reading on the tire gauge.
A package for emergencies and hiccups on the road
Chances are your Mercedes-Benz is equipped with an emergency kit. But a few add-ons are worth getting, for example you should always have a full charge on your mobile phone when you’re venturing out in tough weather. A flashlight with extra batteries, a blanket, a set of jumper cables can also be good to have in case of emergency.
