Here's the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53: Where Plug-In Hybrid Meets High Performance
October 27 2023,
Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electric vehicle offerings with the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 plug-in hybrid, set to arrive at Canadian dealerships in early 2026. Available in both SUV and Coupe body styles, this new model aims to blend performance with practicality, offering an electric range suitable for daily use.
Under the hood, the GLE 53 features an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, fine-tuned to deliver 443 horsepower, a 14 hp increase from its predecessor. This combustion engine is paired with a 100 kW (134 hp) electric motor, powered by a 31.2 kWh battery. The combined peak system output stands at an impressive 536 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The vehicle's electric motor employs permanently excited internal rotor synchronous technology, offering nearly instantaneous torque of 354 lb-ft. This eliminates the need for an auxiliary electric compressor, thereby enhancing the vehicle's agility right from a standstill. Charging options include an 11 kW AC and 60 kW DC onboard charger, ensuring quick recharge times.
On the exterior, the GLE 53 showcases hybrid-specific badges and a front fascia designed to direct airflow to an additional heat exchanger. Inside, the MBUX infotainment system offers hybrid-specific displays, including a charging menu and information about the high-voltage battery's temperature and electric range.
The vehicle also comes equipped with AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with adaptive damping, specifically developed for this hybrid model. It balances acoustic damping for electric driving with the sporty character that AMG vehicles are known for. The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs are calibrated to the plug-in hybrid powertrain, offering modes like "Electric" for all-electric driving up to 87 mph and "Battery Hold" to maintain a constant battery state of charge.
With the GLE 53, Mercedes-Benz aims to attract a broader audience by offering a high-performance plug-in hybrid that doesn't compromise on everyday practicality.
