Mercedes-Benz GLC vs Infiniti QX50
July 22 2021,
The compact luxury SUV segment is becoming increasingly refined, and the players in the segment are offering us more and more interesting models. When we take a look at two of the stars of the segment, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Infiniti QX50, we realize that we're looking at two quality products.
However, because the GLC is a superior SUV design, it must look bad on its rival, which says a lot about Mercedes-Benz finesse.
Let's see what allows us to affirm this.
The style
The Infiniti QX50 looks good, but it's hard for any Mercedes-Benz rival to come up with a model that will stand out in the field. The image projected by the GLC is strong and above all, it will stand the test of time. As proof, even though the GLC was designed more than six years ago, it is still relevant today. As for the Infiniti signature, it's very recognizable and is starting to wear out.
Onboard
Inside, Infiniti has made incredible progress over the years. We remember the plastic era in the early 2000s. The QX50 is a quality car, but Mercedes-Benz has been cultivating the richness of its interiors for decades. Once again, we find ourselves in the presence of a GLC that stands out.
The powertrains
Here, the fight isn't even close. Infiniti offers a single engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that's good for 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The performance is quite decent, but you have to take what you get.
At Mercedes-Benz, there are three options waiting for you. First, a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Then, with the AMG 43 version, you get a twin-turbo V6 with 385 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the AMG 63 S trim level offers a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that spits out 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. We're somewhere else.
Better yet, Mercedes-Benz uses a nine-speed automatic transmission to manage its mechanicals (the one in AMG models is faster). Infiniti uses a continuously variable transmission. While it's efficient, it does put a damper on the driving experience.
And all of this is confirmed when you get behind the wheel. The GLC offers the kind of balance and fun you'd expect from the QX50.
