New 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Unveiled with AWD, More Power, More Luxury
November 04 2021,
The all-new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL was unveiled last week and brought with it a host of improvements to the iconic Mercedes-Benz roadster. Here are five things that are new about the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL.
Two New Powertrains Built by AMG
The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL will come in two versions, SL 55 and SL 63. The Mercedes-AMG SL 55 will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that delivers an impressive 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque delivered at just 2,250 rpm.
Next is the new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 which features the same engine, but with a lot more performance. Stepping on the accelerator will unleash 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, powering the driver to 100 km/h in roughly 3.5 seconds. The SL 55 will reach 100 km/h in about 4.0 seconds flat.
4Matic+ AWD is Standard on the Mercedes-AMG SL
One of the major changes made to the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is the introduction of a new 4Matic+ system designed to improve performance while ensuring optimal stability. The new system has a constant variable torque distribution, meaning there is no set torque split. The system uses the engine’s ample power continuously, moving torque from the front to the back as needed to enhance handling and preserve stability and driver confidence.
Better Handling
The Mercedes-AMG SL will handle a lot better than its predecessor, in part thanks to the new AWD system. That said, the Mercedes-AMG SL will also benefit from a new rear-wheel steering system on both the SL 55 and SL 63. Moreover, the SL 63 gets a limited-slip rear differential.
A New and More Luxurious Interior
The interior of the new SL is redesigned from top to bottom, featuring a larger centre screen that is taken from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. This screen measures over 11 inches and features a tilt system to reduce glare. The entire SL interior has been completely redesigned and is built using the highest quality materials. It is also designed to be as functional as possible with the new MBUX infotainment system offering advanced voice command functions.
Rear Seats Are Back
Last but certainly not least, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL now offers rear seats, something we hadn’t seen in a long time in an SL.
