What is The EQ Boost Technology from Mercedes-Benz?
November 29 2021,
Mercedes-Benz EQ Boost technology improves engine performance while reducing fuel consumption, and provides a superior driving experience.
A mild hybrid system
Mercedes-Benz EQ Boost technology is categorized as a mild hybrid system, as it uses a 48-volt battery. This system consists of an electric motor located between the gasoline engine and the transmission that acts as a starter-generator. This saves fuel and provides extra power and torque during acceleration. Also included in the EQ Boost system, a compressor can provide more pressure to the engine's turbocharger to further improve performance and reduce response time. Another benefit of this technology is that the gasoline engine's accessories, such as the air conditioning compressor and water pump, are electrically driven, which reduces losses, further improving performance and economy.
On the road
Mercedes-Benz EQ Boost Technology allows the gasoline engine to shut down when the vehicle is stationary to save fuel. One advantage that makes driving smoother, quieter and more enjoyable than with a traditional stop-start system is that the starter-generator can move the vehicle forward slowly without restarting the gasoline engine, making it possible to drive in electric mode in traffic and eliminating the vibrations caused by starting. When accelerating, the electric system and compressor provide extra torque and power to propel the car smoothly and quickly, without the lag time typically associated with turbo engines. When you brake, the car recovers kinetic energy to recharge the 48-volt battery, limiting the need to run the gasoline engine to provide electricity. In Eco mode, the technology allows the gasoline engine to shut off when you release the throttle, letting you slow down gently, without using a drop of fuel.
