Mercedes-Benz C-Class versus Audi A4: a matter of engines
August 31 2018,
Last year in Canada, nearly 11,000 Mercedes-Benz C-Class units were sold. For comparison, only 7,000 Audi A4s were sold across the country. What can explain such a huge difference between the two models?
Let's take a closer look. Both the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class have been redesigned recently and offer modern technologies, no doubt about it. Both also offer several versions and a refined style. The road behavior in terms of comfort is very similar too.
What can explain the difference? We probably have to look towards the engines because at this level, the C-Class largely dominates the A4. That said, let's also mention that the C-Class offers a more spacious trunk and cabin than the Audi. For some, the Mercedes-Benz is simply the most versatile option and that's why it's their choice.
To get back to the engines, let's take a look at the entry-level engines first. In the case of the A4, we are entitled to a four-cylinder engine that develops 190 horsepower. In the C-Class, the four-cylinder in question is turbocharged and offers 255 horsepower.
To get close to it, you have to go for the Audi A4’s turbo engine and Quattro all-wheel-drive, but still there are three horses (252) less than in the C300. The A4 is heavier, and therefore the difference is noticeable.
Note also that the C43 AMG develops 385 horsepower against 354 for the Audi S4, the sportiest Audi A4. At Mercedes-Benz, there are still two other V8 engines still available which respectively develop 469 hp and 503 hp.
In short, this more complete range of engines combined with the fact that each engine is more powerful than that of the A4 certainly explains the success of the C-Class. For more information, contact us today at Mercedes-Benz Ottawa Downtown!
