Mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLS
April 14 2021,
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a revised CLS for 2022 as the model reaches the midpoint of its production cycle, having started in 2019. On the menu are changes that prioritize styling with distinct new features and a slightly revised interior.
As with the current model, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLS will be offered with two trim levels in Canada: CLS 450 4Matic CLS 53 AMG, the performance-oriented variant.
The CLS 450 gets a redesigned grille and a three-dimensional starburst badge for a striking effect. A new lower bumper with gloss black accents is also noteworthy. All CLS 450s built for Canada will also receive the AMG Exterior Styling Package as standard equipment. This includes a more aggressively styled front fascia and vertical air intakes.
The CLS 53 AMG model gets a completely redesigned front end, featuring the AMG grille with vertical bars. Models with optional black or carbon fiber accent packages also receive corresponding exterior mirrors (gloss black or carbon fiber).
The styling updates to the 2022 CLS may seem minor, but it's the key element with this model, the one that motivates its purchase by consumers, so keeping its signature fresh is of paramount importance.
Mechanically, there are no changes to report as the CLS 450 4Matic is still powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder that develops 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
The CLS 53 AMG uses the same engine and also combines it with an integrated 48-volt starter-generator (mild hybrid system) that can briefly deliver an additional 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The CLS 53 AMG is rated at 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque.
Both variants, of course, benefit from 4Matic all-wheel drive. A nine-speed automatic transmission is responsible for delivering power to the wheels. In the case of the CLS 53 AMG, it inherits a more advanced version of the transmission (Speedshift) and the 4Matic system (called 4Matic+) that is designed for sporty driving; it can send up to 100% of the torque to the rear wheels.
Inside, both versions of the sedan received a new Napa leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. The CLS 450 advances two new finish options, namely Open Pore Walnut Brown or Glossy Gray Wood, while leather upholstery is now available in Neva Gray/Magma Gray or Hazelnut Brown/Black.
The updated 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 and CLS 53 AMG will hit Canadian dealerships this fall. Pricing information will be released closer to the on-sale date.
