The advantages of having a dedicated rim/tire set for winter
November 30 2021,
The cold season has given us its first precipitation and you still have time to buy and install your winter tires. In Quebec, winter tires are mandatory between December 1 and March 15. All-season tires are not compliant during this period, and all winter tires must display the "snowflake mountain" symbol.
In Ontario, winter tires are not mandatory. But according to surveys, about 73% of Ontarians choose to have winter tires installed - their efficiency and the added safety they bring to the driver, their passengers and other motorists around are proven, especially on the roads of our region where conditions can change rapidly.
But what about changing the tires? Obviously, you could use just one set of rims and have your winter tires mounted on your summer rims and have your summer tires mounted on the same rims every year twice. But this comes with its share of drawbacks.
For example, summer rims on your Mercedes-Benz will be subject to the elements all winter long. They may require more maintenance and, over time, lose their shine.
In addition, the operation of installing/removing the tires on the wheels twice a year is a time-consuming process.
If you opt for a complete set of winter tires matched with Mercedes-Benz rims, you will retain the original look of the vehicle. In addition, the operation of mounting your tires will not require additional labour, which will save you costs in the long run.
Your summer rims will keep their shine, just like your winter rims. And the storage won't take up any more space.
Whatever your choice, it is important to always check the condition of your tires and rims before installing them. Your Mercedes-Benz technician can evaluate this for you. For example, the tread should have a minimum thickness of 1.6 mm, but if the thickness of the tread is less than 4.8 mm, it is quite possible that your tire will not be able to survive the winter, especially if you plan on driving more than 10,000 kilometres during the cold season.
